Sharon Sinclair leads the Island Bel Canto Singers at a rehearsal on Tuesday (Dec. 2) night at St. Paul's Anglican Church. The Island Bel Canto Singers will be performing twice this weekend.

For nearly two decades the Island Bel Canto Singers have been committed to supporting young singers in Nanaimo region.

“That’s what we have made a tradition of doing ever since we started this choir,” said Island Bel Canto’s communication director Laurene Coleman. “It’s about giving an opportunity for upcoming young musicians in Nanaimo to perform in a supportive environment.”

That tradition will carry on this weekend when the choir holds its Christmas concert, Wintersong: Melodies of Christmas Then and Now at Brechin United Church on Saturday (Dec. 6) and Sunday (Dec. 7) at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre on Spartan Road.

Both concerts will feature young harpists Hayley Farenholtz, Kaleigh Stroink and Ava Barakso.

“We had one rehearsal with them and they basically just nailed it the first time we played with them,” Coleman said.
