Riff Raff used to get drunk in his car and freestyle with his friends.
The rapper said that is how he first got interested in the genre.
“Drinking is fun, being sober sucks,” said Riff Raff in an e-mail. “You take the fun out of the party and everyone starts to hate what they are wearing and go to the bathroom and look in the mirror and stuff … just tear the mirror off the wall, at your house not the club, and just get snazzy and bring your hottest and coolest friends and get some party action going.”
The artist is performing in Nanaimo during the Riff Raff Aquaberry Aquarius Tour to promote his latest album. Riff Raff promises a high-energy show with loud music and bright lights. His album Aquaberry Aquarius is one of five albums he’s currently working on. Riff Raff said he wanted to create “new cosmic songs.”
“The next one is The Alcoholic Alligator and it pertains to the fact that I’m an alcoholic and also addicted to jewelry and I’m OK with that,” said Riff Raff. “I have tough skin and I don’t let much get to me, but I don’t need people around me that aren’t down for the goal of life and luxury, which is what I’m after.”
On Aquaberry Aquarius, Riff Raff collaborated with other songwriters.
“I actually had a few people help write some of the hooks on this album, something I never did in the past,” he said. “I wrote all my songs but this album, but I collaborated more and used people’s ideas or at least considered them.”
He also collaborated with a number of guest artists including TommyGirl on the song Root Beer Float Ghost.
“She is a new artist from Pittsburgh and really has a nice sound,” said Riff Raff. “Great song for this album. I wanted some nice angelic vocals on this album.”
