Buccaneers will invade the Harbour City this weekend.
Beginning on Saturday (Feb. 28) a Cowichan Valley-based production company, South Island Musical Theatre Society, will bring its latest musical, The Pirates of Penzance, to the Port Theatre.
The Pirates of Penzance is the love story of a pirate who wants to marry, but whose father is in the military and strictly opposes the marriage. The production is based on the Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert 1879 comic opera of the same name.
South Island Musical Theatre Society executive and marketing manager Laura Westwick said that The Pirates of Penzance is the perfect production for the entire family.
“The reason why I think it is great for families is there is no foul language or suggestive themes,” Westwick said.
The production features a live orchestra and includes a relatively young cast starring Cowichan Valley actors Terry Finch, Jacob Dennison, Hanna Seinen, Mary Egan-Popovich, Christina Holt and Alison Bendall.
“We have a really young cast, which is really nice because we don’t always have that,” Westwick said. “I was actually blown away when we had our auditions back in September, at how many young talented people in the Cowichan Valley came out and auditioned and tried out for this.”
Those who take in the production will experience a wide range of emotions, according to Westwick.
“You’re going to be thoroughly entertained. You’re going to laugh and you’re going to cry,” Westwick said. “You’re going to be surprised that something that could be written over a hundred years ago can still be entertaining today.”
The production runs from Fri. 28 until March 1 at the Port Theatre. Tickets range from $5 to $32 and can be purchased by calling 250-754-8550.
