Nanaimo’s Globe Hotel is hoping to build a community around live music.
On Feb. 29 the venue is launching its Globe Music Social Club with a concert featuring Vancouver band Cocaine Moustache, as well as local openers the Greasy Hombres and Queen tribute Hot Space.
Promoter Heath Fenton said the new concert series will feature two shows each month and is currently booked into the summer.
It’s been nearly a year since Cocaine Moustache were last in Nanaimo touring in support of their 2019 album, All Hail The Rail.
The Globe show will also be one of the band’s first gigs since lead singer Jesse Burch fell 14 feet off a ladder and dislocated two ribs, broke five and punctured his lung.
“Obviously it was terrifying when it happened and it hurt like hell and it was a long recovery, but I’m back and stronger than ever,” said Burch, who goes by the stage name Willie Sniffsum.
Burch said he’s looking forward to performing on Leap Day. He noted that the next time Feb. 29 falls on a Saturday will be in 2048.
“I actually said to my wife, ‘We need to plan something really exciting for Leap Day’ and then as it turned out we booked a show,” he said. “So what’s more exciting than playing with your band?”
WHAT’S ON … Cocaine Moustache plays the Globe Hotel, 25 Front St., on Saturday, Feb. 29. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 9. Tickets $10 at the venue.
