The Nanaimo Pottery Co-op is preparing to feature the works of many talented ceramic artists this coming weekend.

The group’s second outdoor summer tent sale will be held at Country Club Centre, between Atmosphere and Urban Barn, on July 30 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The sale will feature the work of Hazel Dean, who creates functional and colourful pieces with a modern vintage flair. According to a press release, her pottery journey started approximately three years ago with weekly classes at the Nanaimo Ceramics Gallery on Wallace Street. Only a year after starting classes, Dean set up an in-home studio and began to “dabble with different techniques and styles.”

“The adventure is ongoing and I find the medium of clay a beautiful one for my personal artistic expression,” said Dean in the release, adding that she likes to draw inspiration from her garden and ‘old world rug’ and quilt patterns.

In her process, Dean uses a combination of hand painting with underglazes and rice paper transfers on bisque ware clay.

To create colour, she uses slips and stains on unfired pottery to create a watercolour effect, noted the release.

Dean’s work at the July 30 summer sale will include her summer vintage berry bowls, strawberry and sunflower mugs, a grouping of floral blue and white vintage dinnerware, black and white chicken mugs, vintage bicycle mugs and a line of copper and blue tableware.

“My theme is very summery, bright and has a modern look that blends in with many styles,” said Dean.
