For its spring concert, the Malaspina Choir will present the “beautiful and uplifting” concert Lux: Light Eternal.

The performance at the Port Theatre on Sunday, April 28, will feature Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem along with Joseph Haydn’s Adam and Eve duet and chorus for the Creation, John Rutter’s ‘Arise, Shine’ for choir and organ, and Morten Lauridsen’s ‘O Nata Lux’ (O Light of Light).

The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and Island Bel Canto Singers will be special guests for the concert.

A release for the show noted that “the concert includes 100 voices singing ‘Lux Aeterna’ (Light Eternal) – a glorious choral version of Elgar’s most famous ‘Nimrod’ melody from his Enigma Variations.”

Choir member Eric Cottrell, who is also a singer-songwriter and plays guitar in a garage band, spent roughly 10 hours a week working with artistic director Fiona Blackburn on the Lux: Light Eternal program. He has grown to love the harmonic complexity of classical music and has become inspired to work on writing choral music.

“I am looking forward to performing this concert. The music is absolutely beautiful and uplifting,” he said in the release. “It’s amazing being immersed in this big music-making machine and wonderful to hear all the parts around you … Making music is like therapy. It releases endorphins and stimulates the brain and relaxes the body.”
