Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra concerts bring ‘breath of spring’

First concert to be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on March 11

The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra is preparing for the “winds of March and breath of spring” with two concerts this month.

According to a release, NCO’s upcoming concerts will feature the Faire Wynds wind quartet in a program titled Winds of March, playing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Four winds as a piece in three movements with variations.

For Faire Wynds, Margaret Fisher will play the French horn, Kerry Graham will play the bassoon, Phil Haig will play the clarinet and Deborah Vitek will play the oboe.

Also included in the concert’s program is Frideric Handel’s Concerto Grosso No. 1, Karl Jenkins’ Palladio, Ennio Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe, and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis.

“This fantasia is a wonderful 20th century melding of two orchestras plus soloists in the re-structuring of the original late Renaissance work of Tallis,” noted the release.

The release also noted that although NCO has typically been directed by Karl Rainer from the concertmaster’s chair, Wings of March will feature Parksville’s Ann Barber-Becqué as the conductor.

Winds of March performances are scheduled for Saturday, March 11, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Departure Bay Road in Nanaimo, and again on Sunday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m. at the Gabriola Island Community Hall on South Road.
