Author Susan Juby won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and a $15

Nanaimo author Susan Juby tickled some funny bones with her novel, Republic of Dirt.

She was awarded the 2016 Leacock Medal for Humour Writing for the book during a gala dinner at the Geneva Park Conference Centre, near Orillia, Ont. June 11.

The win also came with a $15,000 prize, supported by TD Financial Group.

The other shortlisted authors were Terry Fallis for Poles Apart and Sarah Mian for When The Saints.

Juby was previously shortlisted for the Leacock Medal for Humour for her book for adults, The Woefield Poultry Collective.

Republic of Dirt: Return to Woefield is a follow-up to Juby’s book The Woefield Poultry Collective. It tells the story of Prudence Burns, a Brooklyn girl who inherited a derelict property called Woefield Farm.

Juby was raised in Smithers and now lives in Nanaimo. She is a creative writing and journalism professor at Vancouver Island University and has won numerous awards for her writing.
