After an injury took her out of commission for a good portion of the year, a Lantzville ceramic artist has new sets of original pieces just in time for the holidays.
Heather Goldminc of Clayworks Studio said a car accident in January left her with nerve damage that impacted her mobility and ability to effectively create. She said she’s been in recovery for the past 10 months or so.
However, with clever collaboration, Goldminc has been able to design and create planters, amaryllis bulb pots, wise men, snowmen and gingerbread trees – thanks to potter Amy Ganton who provided her with potted shapes to build upon.
“I was trying to figure out how to work with the clay without me having to do the bowl work for it. [Ganton] came in from the Nanaimo Ceramics Arts centre … and she’s been potting for me all year long. We designed these angel bells and great big Christmas trees … And then I was able to sit and build onto those, which was tremendously exciting … It took a lot of the pressure off of my arm,” Goldminc said. “It’s been interesting – you do something out of necessity, and then find it actually works really well.”
One of her favourite new features this year is the addition of moonstones to several angels as halos.
“That moonstone was brought in from India – it’s gorgeous,” she said. Goldminc worked with the gemstone earlier this year when she designed and created three wise men originals for her studio that sold instantly. “They had those gemstones in their hair and little tiny cut crystals … I also work with a lot of 22-karat gold, so the two of them go together nicely.”
