Korean dance company to stage first-ever Canadian performance in Nanaimo

Modern Table’s Sok-do commemorates 60 years of diplomatic relations

For their first performance in Canada, a Korean contemporary dance company will display speeds and motions of the human body at the Port Theatre.

As hosted by the Korean Culture and Information Service, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Cultural Centre Canada, Modern Table will perform Sok-do on Feb. 22 to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Korea.

The performance by Modern Table is also a co-presentation of the theatre’s Spotlight Series, and will be the only West Coast staging.

In Sok-do, which translates to speed, or velocity, nine male dancers will display extraordinary physical prowess in a journey propelled by varying velocities. They will be driven by three traditional musicians and the rhythmic sounds of the ajaeng, a seven-stringed Korean instrument used in court music, according to a release for the performance.

“The bold body movements created through contacts and interactions with the air and vigorous rhythmic expressions allow the audience to immerse and feel the change in velocity,” noted the release.

The dance company was founded by Kim Jae-duk in 2007 as a project-based group, and in those 16 years, they have found success across national and international stages.

Modern Table strives to provide synesthetic experiences and inspirational impressions, including works that break boundaries between the stage, the audience and art forms.
