A Vancouver Island indie-folk band’s second album will showcase four distinct creators as they blend “acoustic folk and dreamy harmonies” with indie rock.

Music Hall is compromised of multi-instrumentalists Arlen Thompson, Andrew Halliwell, and married singer-songwriters Tasha Cyr and Erik Virtanen.

According to a release, Bird Screaming was recorded by Halliwell, mixed by Thompson in Lantzville and Nanaimo, and is a follow-up to the band’s album debut Let the Night Disappear in 2022.

Bird Screaming was initiated by Canada Council for the Arts when Virtanen set out to write 10 songs inspired by life on the West Coast after being away for many years.

“It led to honest musings on time slipping away, depression and anxiety, seeking a sense of place and our connection with nature,” noted the release.

Initially, Virtanen brought acoustic demos to the other members of Music Hall and the demos were then later fully developed and arranged in studio.

The resulting 10-track album will be available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and YouTube Music on July 28, with singles streaming in weeks leading up.

The debut single from Bird Screaming, Make the Lights the Sun, will be released Friday, July 7.
