Sporting a floral print suit, the character of God answers questions that might arise when meeting an omnipotent being for the first time in the comedy show God is a Scottish Drag Queen.

Everything from Justin Bieber to the pope is taken aim at in this one-man comedy show created by Mike Delamont and Jacob Richmond more than 10 years ago during the cabaret Atomic Vaudeville in Victoria.

The character was created when the cabaret decided to do a battle of the bands skit between Jesus and Satan. Delamont decided to play the character of God with a Scottish accent and wearing a “feminine pink frock.”

“The character by far is my favourite,” said Delamont, adding that the character is “fun, silly and super sarcastic.”

The show covers a diverse range of topics.

“I talk about Noah and the flood and really how stupid cats are,” said Delamont.

How are stupid cats and the flood connected? Delamont said people need to come to the show to find out.

He said anyone who has a religious background will get a little bit more meaning out of the jokes, but it’s not necessary.

Delamont said he’s an atheist, but he wants people to know the show isn’t anti-God or religious.

“This isn’t a bitter, mean show. It’s about religion, but really not,” he said. “Very much the character is in on the joke. I never take anything too serious about the show.”

One of his favourite aspects of the show is being able to tackle some very intense subjects with humour and fun, said Delamont.

The show changes depending on what city it’s being performed in. Delamont said it is based on the premise that God is in that town for that night interacting with the people in the audience. Issues affecting the particular community could become part of the show.

Delamont said he grew up watching a lot of British comedy, Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder and also shows like Fawlty Towers with John Cleese.

The comedian has been nominated for three Canadian Comedy Awards, including Break Out Year and Best Solo Show.
