Dancers raise money for earthquake relief funds

The waters receded but the cleanup continues in Japan and a group of Nanaimo dance companies want to help out.

On Friday (May 20), 7:30 p.m., dancers will take the stage at Beban Park Auditorium to benefit the Canadian Red Cross’s efforts to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit the island nation in March.

Groundworks Tap Co., with Vibe dance company and Helix Dance Theatre, will perform with Kirkwood youth dance company, Harbour Dancentre, Parksville Ballet School, B2Glee and Allegro Performing Arts Centre. A solo performance by Lindsay Sterk of Pantuso Dance is also included.

Groundworks was founded in 2009 to offer more training and performing opportunities for dancers who love to tap dance. Admission to the company is by audition, with performances on the Island the Lower Mainland.

All the proceeds from Friday’s performance will go to the Red Cross. Tickets are available at Performing Fabrics. For more information, please e-mail groundworkstapco@hotmail.com.
