The big top is getting set up in Nanaimo this week, as the circus has come to town.

Circo Osorio returns to the city from Thursday until Monday, Sept. 29-Oct. 3, in the Woodgrove Centre parking lot.

“The No. 1 thing that we have that makes us a little more special is our event is held under a big top … it makes it a little bit more personal,” said Frank Osorio, one of the owners of the circus.

This year’s show is themed ‘Hola Canada’ to recognize the circus’ emphasis on featuring performers of Latino heritage, said Osorio.

As far as the acts planned, Circo Osorio is excited to showcase two motorcyclists inside ‘the Globe of Death.’

“[They] get inside a big steel sphere and they ride over 60, 70 kilometres an hour. That’s the finishing act that we have, the star of our show,” Osorio said.

Lazerman will manipulate lasers during his part of the show, and there will also be a balancing act, trapeze feats, acrobats, jugglers and clowns – “a full circus,” Osorio said, except no exotic animals.

When he spoke to the News Bulletin, the circus trailers were in the ferry lineup in Tsawwassen on their way to Nanaimo, the only Vancouver Island stop this year. Osorio said everyone was looking forward to returning to the Island.

“It holds a special place in my heart,” he said. “The first time we came to Canada, I think in 2016, the Island was our very first stop on the Canadian tour and after that, it’s grown.”

Two children 10 and under will be admitted free with every paying adult. Tickets cost $25 in advance at http://tickets-ca.americancrowncircus.com or $30 at the door. Showtimes are 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 5 p.m. on Monday.
