Coming to terms with insecurities and difficult moments in her past shaped Stephanie Morin-Robert’s one woman storytelling comedy show.

“It’s all about overcoming your insecurities and realizing what you often perceive about you is not true,” said Morin-Robert.

Morin-Robert said the message in the show is not to be afraid to be yourself.

When she was two years old, Morin-Robert lost her left eye to cancer. After treatment she received a glass eye. During her youth, Morin-Robert dealt with self acceptance and struggled with how people perceived her.

Her journey creating the show started in Montreal, when she was invited to take part in a short storytelling event.

“A lot of stories I could tell were all in the same time in my life. All took place when I was seven or eight years old,” said Morin-Robert.

Over the years, she told the stories in different contexts.

“At first, the stories were difficult to tell for the show was emotional and I was grieving something I never really dealt with,” said Morin-Robert.

But over the years the story evolved. Morin-Robert was able to step away from the grief and turn the show into one about celebrating aspects of yourself and allowing yourself to be vulnerable.

Morin-Robert said the show is “heartbreaking and hilarious.”

“It’s me coming to terms with my glass eye and wielding my disability as a super power,” she said.

While the show is comedic, it also delves into emotional topics.

“There is an emotional arc that happens,” said Morin-Robert.

Blindside is Monday (April 10) at 7 p.m. at the Port Theatre. The show is a free youth event for people 25 years old and younger. Tickets are free for youth, but must be reserved by calling 250-754-8550 or www.porttheatre.com and are $10 for adults.

The event includes food and activities that start at 6 p.m. at the theatre. A post show question-and-answer period follows.
