To wrap up its children’s series, a Nanaimo theatre company wants audience members on stage for a fun take on an old classic.

TheatreOne will present Dufflebag Theatre’s Cinderella at Vancouver Island University on Saturday, April 13, as the final show in its Just Kidding for Kids series.

According to a release for the production, audiences will recognize familiar characters, including Cinderella, a fairy godmother, an ugly stepmother and a handsome prince.

Dufflebag Theatre’s twist on its family-friendly version will invite audience members up on the stage to play the main parts.

“Kids are enchanted by the clever stagecraft and witty narration and thrilled to watch their peers be included in the company’s performances,” noted the release. “Especially when the performers don’t go exactly by the book.”

Also in the release, TheatreOne’s artistic director David Mann said Dufflebag Theatre is one of the most successful touring theatre troupes for young audiences.

“As they have done with multiple fairy tales, the Dufflebag team has adapted the well-loved story of Cinderella to their unique interactive style of theatre. Children get to take part in the play, and all the costumes and props literally come out of a big dufflebag,” he said.

Cinderella will be staged at Malaspina Theatre on Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.theatreone.ca or at the door.
