To celebrate the release of their debut single, an all-female, all-queer Vancouver band will play Nanaimo as they tour the Island.

Sophie Heppell, Jessie Robertson, Jen Foster and Luvia Petersen of the Hyaenas will take the Vault Café’s stage on Friday, June 10, at 9 p.m.

According to a release for the show, their single Little Trophy dropped Thursday, June 2, and the band is currently working toward a release of a debut EP this year.

“Little Trophy is the perfect introductory song – it pulls you into a pocket of grit and groove, pairing punchy bass and drums with catchy melodies and crystalline harmonies. With powerful lyrics that rebel against the sexual objectification of women, Little Trophy makes you feel the layers of the patriarchy unapologetically stripping away,” noted the release.

The Hyaenas describe themeselves as a new indie rock band breaking into the Canadian music scene.

“With fun, catchy hooks, their songs are written through a queer feminist lens, exploring meaningful themes from acceptance to vigilance, celebrating a love of nature, witchcraft, and social justice while drawing inspiration from ’80s icons the Go-Go’s to modern day indie darlings Warpaint,” the release added.

Tickets for the June 10 performance are $15 each and can be purchased at the door.
