Before youngsters go collecting candy on Halloween night, a group of Nanaimo youths will be out during the daytime trying to collect non-perishable food items for a good cause.

Youth 20/20 Can Nanaimo has organized a food drive it’s calling Halloween for Hunger, and will be outside the former Pier 1 Imports location in the Woodgrove Centre parking lot on Oct. 31 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Sonja Ferg, one of the event organizers, said Youth 20/20 Can Nanaimo is a local youth organization that’s interested in projects that help others.

The youths will be dressed in Halloween costumes and all the food they collect will go to the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank.

“Hopefully we can raise a lot for them,” said Kamilla Duha, another member of the group. “If you have any non-perishable items, please bring them to us.”
