Workshop deals with dementia

It’s never too early to start planning for the future – especially if your family is dealing with dementia.

It’s never too early to start planning for the future – especially if your family is dealing with dementia.

The non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers tips for personal planning at a free tele-workshop on Thursday (March 29) at 7 p.m.

Barbara Lindsay, the society’s senior manager of advocacy and public policy, joins lawyer Emily Clough in reviewing points for family caregivers and people at the early stage of the illness.

Starting to plan for the future as early as possible ensures that the person with dementia can play a role in making important health care and financial decisions.

Participants in the tele-workshop explore the different kinds of planning that need to be considered, and look at strategies for ensuring that the person’s wishes are honoured now and in the future.

Tele-workshops are learning sessions designed for family caregivers, but also open to health-care providers. They can be accessed via telephone, with an optional web component, recognizing that many caregivers are unable to attend in-person workshops.
