The United Way’s annual giving campaign couldn’t hold its usual kickoff event, but supporting the organization is as important as ever.

The United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island’s fall campaign is now underway, with the agency asking businesses and individuals to consider workplace giving.

Signy Madden, executive director of the United Way CNVI, spoke at Monday’s Nanaimo city council meeting and thanked the community for its support with last year’s campaign, which allowed the United Way to help more than 10,000 people in the region through 40 programs across 31 agencies.

“COVID’s hitting United Way like everybody else, and so we will be talking to you through the fall as well as we work to encourage people to continue to give locally and support locally,” Madden said.

She added in a press release that United Way’s local partner agencies need more help than ever because the pandemic has led to increased demand for social services.

United Way’s workplace giving asks businesses to support UWCNVI through one-time or monthly payroll donations. Individuals and workplaces interested in hosting a United Way campaign are asked to visit http://uwcnvi.ca or e-mail rdo@uwcnvi.ca.

“We are working hard to find the best, innovative ways for our partner organizations to continue to host their internal campaigns. We are beyond grateful to have the support of so many individuals and organizations,” Madden said. “As we continue to move together through this crisis, we know we will be resilient because of our local love.”
