Tourism association to up economic role

Tourism stakeholders from around the province are united in their industry playing a greater role in B.C.’s economy.

The Council of Tourism Associations of B.C. met in Nanaimo April 11-13 for the second annual B.C. Tourism Leaders’ Summit and annual general meeting to stake its place in the economy.

Summit participants discussed a reset plan for the organization that included growing its membership, changing bylaws to increase the number of directors on the board, increasing the credibility of its policy development, improving communications, solidifying its business model and taking new steps in government relations.

Members of the association also voted on a new name – Tourism Industry Association of B.C. – reflecting the growing number of tourism businesses that have joined the association in recent years.

Members provided feedback on ways to strengthen the plan and endorsed key board recommendations that will help the association re-establish its role as the voice of the tourism industry.

“We have a board of directors committed to a united voice for tourism that is respected by industry and government,” said Lana Denoni, chairwoman of the board of directors.

“We are thrilled the membership overwhelmingly supported our reset plan, and that government provided an equally clear endorsement of its desire to work with a strong sector trade association.”
