A school and office supply store in Nanaimo is holding a fundraiser in the lead up to the start of school to benefit the United Way.

Staples stores are holding a school supply drive until Sunday, Sept. 11. Rup Parmar, Aulds Road store general manager, said the campaign has been running for 17 years, raising funds for students to access supplies and limit barriers to their learning.

Customers can donate when they are paying for purchases at the cash register, or come in and make a donation, said Parmar.

“Back-to-school season can be really busy and stressful for a lot of parents and students and also a financial burden, that’s why we want to give families and students a leg up and help them go back to school with confidence,” said Parmar.

Parmar said United Way was selected as the charity of choice in Western Canada because of its focus areas, including assisting children by giving them the support they need to get a good start in school and reach their potential.

Trends for back-to-school include tablet computers such as the Google Chromebook and iPad Pro, and Macbook computers, according to Parmar. In terms of pens and pencils, Crayola has Colors of the World crayons and coloured pencils which are meant to highlight cultural diversity.

Staples’ school supply drive has raised $15 million over the years.
