The shortest day of the year will be followed by the longest night of the year, and the occasion is being celebrated with music, lanterns and spirituality.
Nanaimo’s Bethlehem Centre hosts its solstice celebration Dec. 21 to mark the long night.
“This darkness is marked by a movement towards the lengthening of days and journey towards spring,” noted an event press release.
This year’s theme is ‘hygge,’ a Scandinavian term that translates to the creation of “cosy and convivial atmospheres that promote well-being,” according to the release.
Tickets to the dinner are sold out, but admission to the night’s other events is by donation.
At 6:30 p.m. there will be Tibetan bowl and gong meditation, then the candlelit labyrinth walk is at 7 p.m. followed by music with Tony Turner at 7:15 p.m. Hot apple cider will be served, the centre’s gift shop will hold a seasonal sale, and expert Carol Matthews will be at the finger labyrinth museum.
The not-for-profit Bethlehem Centre is on Arbot Road close to Westwood Lake.
