Seniors workout at Oliver Woods park

Nanaimo parks, recreation and culture department is celebrating B.C. Seniors Week (June 5-11) with a workout at Oliver Woods Outdoor Wellness Park.

The city and ActNow BC are hosting free drop-in sessions from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday (June 7) at the wellness park next to the playground at Oliver Woods Community Centre.

The sessions will consist of four, 15-minute circuits lead by a B.C. Recreation and Parks Association trainer, and will include a brief question and answer period. The first 25 participants will receive an ActNow BC healthy living prize package.

The park’s stationary equipment and layout is designed to improve mobility, strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health.

The majority of the funding for the park came from an ActNow BC grant. Additional funding and operational support was provided by the Nanaimo Harbour City Seniors which contributed $18,000 toward the project.

“It is the mandate of Nanaimo Harbour City Seniors to promote the physical and mental well-being of its members, and by spearheading this initiative, I believe, met that mandate,” said Lynda Avis, president of the Nanaimo Harbour City Seniors.

The incorporation of exercise equipment into an urban park setting is not a new idea. Similar wellness parks are common in Asia and there are now 19 such parks across B.C.

The equipment is free to use for all residents 13 and over. For more information about the park, please call 250-756-5200.
