Paddling ramps up

With paddling weather fast approaching, Nanaimo Paddling Centre is gearing up for a fun-filled season of dragonboat paddling and racing.

The centre is recruiting new paddlers and teams for the 2011 season.

“There are so many opportunities to get out and paddle and train to compete,” said Holly Wylie, centre manager for Go Rowing and Paddling. “We have women’s teams, mixed teams, senior’s teams and a junior program.”

Dragonboating is a sprint-type of racing, with events held over one or two days, usually including several races of 250 metres to 500m in length.

Dragonboats race with 20 paddlers, a steersman and a drummer.

“With such easy access to our beautiful ocean, it’s a perfect chance to get out and try a sport that’s easy to learn,” said Wylie.
