Nominations sought for equality award

Status of Women Canada is looking for men and women who have contributed to the goal of equality for women in Canada.

Nominations for the 32nd annual Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case are due by June 17.

Each October, six awards are presented to candidates from across Canada who have helped advance equality for women and girls. Candidates must be Canadian citizens and at least 30 years old.

A Persons Case Youth Award is available to people aged 15-30.

The Governor General of Canada began the awards in 1979 to honour the 50th anniversary of the Persons Case and the five Alberta women whose determination led to the Privy Council’s 1929 decision that women were “qualified persons” and therefore eligible for appointment to the Senate.
