The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge‬, inspired by Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who is living with ALS, has grabbed attention as people are nominated to donate or be doused in ice water.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is an incurable disease that destroys the motor neurons that send electric impulses between the muscles and brain.

For more information about ALS and how it affects people and families, please see the News Bulletin's series A Journey with ALS, which follows Serge and Nicky Vaillancourt and their day-to-day struggle with the disease, plus looks at ground-breaking research happening at the University of British Columbia, where scientists think they are close to finding a cure for the devastating disease.
