A non-profit in Nanaimo will serve lovers of literacy food for thought when it holds its huge used book sale again starting this week.
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo’s fundraising sale takes place at Nanaimo North Town Centre, from Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 14. Janeane Coutu, book sale committee co-chairperson, said there will be 80,000 used books for people to peruse and a goal of raising $100,000.
“We’re expecting a big crowd,” Coutu told the News Bulletin. “Every year the Friday crowd gets bigger and bigger because people come with their lists. They want specific books, so they know to come on Day 1.”
The spring sale’s beneficiary is still to be determined, but Coutu said applications from potential recipients are accepted year-round.
You never know what you might find, according to Coutu.
“One time a nun bought a bunch of different things, but one in particular was a bible and it had a $100 bill in it and she brought it back to us and donated it, which is super sweet,” she said. “We get kids that will find a book that they are just so excited about … last year we had somebody that said they’d been looking for three years for this one particular book at all different book sales, so it’s really fun to hear those stories.”
Books cost up to $3 each. With the exception of April 5, when doors open at 8 a.m., the sale will follow mall hours of 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
