Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation is cashing in with its campaign to raise $5 million to help construct Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s new intensive care unit, drawing some big donations.
The foundation received a donation of $100,000 from the Shields Foundation, a charitable initiative of Nanaimo-based Coastland Wood Industries, according to a press release issued Monday.
Bob Shields, Coastland Wood Industries owner and founder of the Shields Foundation, learned of the ICU project through his company. The release noted that Coastland Wood Industries has been a strong supporter of the hospital foundation for more than 10 years and its leadership team and employees have seen first-hand the impact large projects have on the delivery of healthcare in their community.
Along with the $100,000 donation, the company will also start an employee donations challenge from which every dollar raised by employees will be matched by the Shields Foundation.
“At the heart of every healthy community is a strong, well-equipped hospital and we are very excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this project,” Shields said in the release.
The current ICU at NRGH is 50 years old and serves more than 400,000 residents who live north of the Malahat. The total cost to build the new ICU is more than $33 million and is a partnership between the provincial government through Island Health, the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District and the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation.
“We are so grateful,” said Janice Krall, hospital foundation chief development officer, in the release. “Support from community leaders such as the Shields family and the Coastland Wood team allows us to provide our exceptional health-care professionals with state-of-the-art medical equipment to care for the most critically ill in our region.”
