The Nanaimo Foodshare Society will be able to keep its fruits and vegetables cool and fresh thanks to a sizeable donation.
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo has presented a $25,000 cheque to Foodshare to help the non-profit association buy a walk-in cooler to keep fruits and veggies grown at urban farms for the Good Food Box program.
“This important donation will help us expand our capacity to grow and share healthy food for people in our community,” said Jen Cody, executive director of Nanaimo Foodshare, in a press release.
She added that the donation comes at an important time, saying the non-profit is taking on “increased responsibilities around enhancing food access” during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said there is more demand right now for the society’s monthly $10 Good Food Boxes, filled with produce grown at Five Acre Farm in Harewood and the Cline Agri-Health Centre in the Westwood Lake area.
The walk-in cooler will be located at Cline farm.
“We are pleased to support Nanaimo Foodshare with this funding that gives immediate and ongoing sustainable benefits to their food program,” said Janeane Coutu, president of the Rotary Club of Nanaimo, in the release. “Their objectives to provide education, employment training, and improve food security for those in need align perfectly with the goals of Rotary.” The Rotary Club of Nanaimo will be celebrating 100 years of service on May 1.
