A seven-figure donation is a shining star in the hospital foundation’s Light the Trees campaign.

The Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s annual Light the Trees campaign, raising money for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s new intensive care unit, received a $1-million donation from the Windsor Plywood Foundation.

A press release from the hospital foundation Friday acknowledged the “incredible” donation which has lifted the fundraising to $3 million of its $5-million goal.

“This is an extraordinary gift…” said Janice Perrino, CEO of the hospital foundation, in the release. “We still have a lot to fundraise, but the Windsor Plywood Foundation took us over the halfway mark and we know our communities will take us the rest of the way. The Windsor Plywood Foundation understands that nothing is more important than the health of our residents. We can’t thank them enough for their leadership with this inspirational donation.”

The release noted that the Windsor Plywood Foundation has supported NRGH for more than 10 years. Cathy Brown, executive director of the Windsor Plywood Foundation, said in the press release that the people of Nanaimo and the surrounding region have been a big part of Windsor’s success over the last 50 years and the donation is an opportunity to give back.

“We have seen first-hand how central and north Island has grown, and how the need for a new and updated ICU has become increasingly critical,” Brown said. “We look forward to this fantastic new addition to the residents of central Island.”
