The B.C. Lottery Corporation’s new shop-local project is supporting Nanaimo’s Loaves and Fishes and 10 other food banks around B.C.

BCLC’s online fundraiser Love Local B.C. launched this week. The lotto corporation purchased items and gift cards from B.C. businesses and made them available on a fundraising web page. When the items are purchased or bid on, the money goes to food banks in B.C.

The press release noted that Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank, through its partnerships with food suppliers, are able to make every donated dollar purchase close to six dollars worth of nutritious, quality food.

“The holiday season can be an especially difficult time for people who are struggling,” said Abby Sauchuk, Loaves and Fishes director of development, in the release. “Your generosity will mean that there will be enough food for anyone in need – making the holidays bright for everyone.”

Peter ter Weeme, BCLC’s vice-president of player experience, said the lotto corporation is proud to support communities, non-profit organizations and local businesses through the Love Local B.C. fundraiser.

BCLC is also partnering with Casino Nanaimo and five other casinos across the province to host food drives in co-ordination with the fundraiser. The casino will be collecting non-perishable food items from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10.
