Literacy day events planned

With Family Literacy Day (Jan. 27) just two days away, families across B.C. are dusting off their bookmarks in preparation for the big event.

And the province’s two literacy organizations – Literacy B.C. and 2010 Legacies Now – want to help make sure everybody knows about all the opportunities to join in.

Nowhere is that more important than within B.C. communities. Since 2005, more than 400 communities across the province have worked with 2010 Legacies Now to identify literacy needs, priorities and goals. Celebration of Family Literacy Day for children and adults takes place Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 29-30) in Nanaimo and on Gabriola Island.

The My Story, Your Story program is a co-ordinated set of events taking place at Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Wellington and Gabriola Island branches Saturday and Nanaimo Harbourfront Library and Serious Coffee on Commercial Street Sunday).

My Story, Your Story celebrates story in many forms for all ages through song, rhyme, storytelling, books, puppet shows, creating personal stories and more.

Event times and places include Gabriola Library, 575 North Rd. 1-3:30 p.m., Jan. 29; Wellington Library, 3032 Barons Rd. 1-3:30 p.m., Jan. 29: Nanaimo Harbourfront Library, 90 Commercial St., 1-3:30 p.m., Jan. 30; and Serious Coffee, 60 Commercial St., 1-3 p.m., Jan. 30.
