Nanaimo’s Sway’ A’ Lana Lagoon at Maffeo Sutton Park will see memorial lanterns light its surface once again.

The 21st annual Lanterns for Peace ceremony will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 9 p.m., when 35 lanterns will be launched at dusk.

A release for the event noted the ceremony is to observe the anniversary of the first use of the atomic bomb when the city of Hiroshima was reduced to ashes in 1945. It is organized annually by the Nanaimo chapter of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

The event is open to the public and anyone interested is invited to help launch the lanterns at 9:30 p.m. Peace songs will begin at 8:30 p.m., followed by speeches from elected officials and more music.
