An old proverb says don’t judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.
In an attempt to raise awareness around issues of sexual assault and gender violence, Haven Society is asking men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes during Saturday’s (May 14) Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Nanaimo event.
The second annual walk starts at Haven Society’s community services building, 2270 Labieux Rd. Registration is 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m.
Seventy participants took part in last year’s event, raising $3,500 for Haven Society. Organizers hope to raise $10,000 at this year’s walk.
Sarah Dymock, resource development coordinator at Haven, said it’s not easy walking in heels, but it’s fun and it gets the community talking about something that’s often difficult to talk about.
“We really appreciate the community’s support and the men being such great sports,” she said.
Registration is $10 per participant and can be paid either online at www.havensociety.com or during registration.
Men, women, children and families are invited to participate, though women and children do not have to wear high heels.
Haven has a small amount of larger women’s shoes for men to use, but selection is limited.
