Haven Society’s Campaign for Courage still needs about $250,000 to reach its goal to pay for the organization’s new community services building.
The society hopes to reach its $1-million goal.
Since moving into the building in November 2009, women and children who access the society’s services are more comfortable and at ease in the new surroundings. The society’s services are also better utilized by clients with the transition house nearby.
Previously, Haven Society programs were spread out across the city in rented buildings.
“We are so close to reaching our goal for the ‘Campaign for Courage’, and we are so thankful to the Nanaimo community for their generous support of the campaign,” said Anne Spilker, executive director of Haven Society.
The organization provides services to women and children, youth and families who experienced violence.
Every year more than 3,000 women and children in the mid Vancouver Island area seek support to deal with issues of physical abuse, sexual abuse and violence. Haven’s programs provide everything from shelter, emotional support, counselling, advocacy, court accompaniment, and most importantly a safe place to begin healing from the abuse.
