The new board chairman of Nanaimo’s hospital foundation is the son of the foundation’s first board chairman.
The Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation announced in a press release this week that Tony Harris has been elected to chair the board for the next two years.
Tony is the son of Tom Harris, who was the first person to chair the hospital foundation’s board from 1993-96.
“Tom’s tireless work to advance health care in the central Island inspired Tony to become a vocal advocate for a new tertiary hospital in Nanaimo,” noted the press release.
Tony Harris has been vice-chairman of the board for the past two years and a member of the board since 2017.
He is a partner at the Harris Kia, Harris Mazda and Nanaimo Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealerships, a real estate developer and investor, and the chairman and CEO of plant-based protein and food technology firm Billy Goat Brands Ltd.
Tony Harris is also the organizer of the Tom Harris Charity Classic golf tournament, which has raised more than $500,000 over the years. The Tom Harris Community Foundation is donating $150,000 toward a new intensive care unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
“On behalf of everyone who has contributed to the Tom Harris Community Foundation we are honoured to support the new ICU to help ensure a healthy future for generations to come,” Tony Harris said in the release.
