Green thumbs recognized at harvest fest

NANAIMO: Farmers' market hosts fall fair competition.

Bigger might not be better, but it can’t hurt at  the Cedar Farmers’ Market Harvest Festival.

The public is invited to take part in a friendly competition Oct. 21 at the Crow and Gate Pub field from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bring your home-grown produce, preserves or handicrafts to be judged for prizes in the following categories:

* Biggest vegetable or fruit.

* Most beautiful vegetable or fruit.

* Ugliest vegetable or fruit.

* Best scarecrow.

* Best handicraft (fabric).

* Best handicraft (wood).

* Best jam or preserve.

* Best baked good.

* Best fruit and veggie sculpture.

Market vendors will also participate in the day’s events, entering their own best home-grown or hand-made items.

The last market of the season is Oct.28, featuring music from Celtic band Trinitude.
