Elevator Club hits go worldwide

What could be regarded as one of Nanaimo’s best kept radio secrets has become a weekly institution for thousands of music lovers all over the world.

Entering its 12th year, Elevator Club, a unique blend of lush instrumentals, soothing vocals and a sprinkling of soft jazz, features music that has all but disappeared from radio ever since rock music overtook the easy listening genre back in the mid 1960s.

Creator and host Gord Bibby launched Elevator Club in April 2000 on CHLY 101.7 FM and added the supplementary website in June 2010 allowing listeners to access weekly play lists, listen to and download archived programs.

“The website hasn’t exactly gone viral but it does average around 1,500 views consistently each month,” said Bibby.

Internet statistics indicate the Elevator Club website has been viewed by people from virtually every corner of the globe including Iran, Brazil and Italy among others, and can heard Sundays at 7 p.m. on CHLY 101.7 FM.

Bibby said he has seen a slight resurgence in the popularity of easy listening music.
