Despite a lack of wind, David Strang managed to windsurf an additional 10 kilometres on his annual crossing of the Georgia Strait to raise money for charity.

Strang, with the support of Saul Hilchey and Tony Harris, attempted to cross the strait for the eighth time in July, but a lack of wind caused him to return to Nanaimo at about the two-thirds point, meaning that he surfed for 40 km, rather than the usual one-way crossing to Sechelt of 30 km.

The annual Nanaimo Gyro Georgia Strait Charity Challenge raised more than $23,500 in corporate donations from RBC Foundation, BMO, Manulife and Dynamic Funds. The money will go toward Nanaimo parks, Child Development Centre and the Salvation Army.

To date, the charity challenge has raised more than $200,000.
