Anyone with confidential documents can make sure those papers remain confidential at an upcoming shredding day at Brooks Landing.
Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers is partnering with Save-On-Foods Brooks Landing and Best Shredding for a day of confidential document shredding Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the supermarket.
The event is a fundraiser for Crime Stoppers, a registered non-profit that receives no government funding, is not a police-based organization and is run solely by volunteers.
Shredding confidential documents significantly reduces chances of being the target of identity theft, police say.
Shredding is by donation; last year’s shredding event raised about $5,000.
“The money is used for administrative purposes, to do our continued learning for our volunteers and to pay tipsters,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers program coordinator. “We are also donating 50 per cent of our proceed to Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services, a very worthwhile agency that serves all the citizens of Nanaimo.”
