United Way asked communities to show local love during the pandemic, and one donor did that to the tune of $25,000.

Coastal Community Credit Union donated $25,000 to the United Way of Central and Northern Vancouver Island and United Way Greater Victoria.

Signy Madden, executive director of United Way CNVI, said in a press release that the organization is grateful for the credit union’s help in responding to challenges of COVID-19.

“We know our local community partner agencies are struggling to operate and adapt their much-needed programs within the constraints of COVID-19,” she said. “We are seeing many needs that government funds aren’t touching and CCCU’s donation – this act of local love – gives us the ability to respond immediately.”

Allyson Prescesky, senior manager of community and communications at CCCU, said in the release that United Way chapters do important work, from helping vulnerable families and seniors to supporting mental health resources.

“We’re honoured to help in their efforts, knowing that when they do good locally, it helps improve the health and vitality of the communities we’re all a part of,” Prescesky said.

The money will be distributed through direct grants that will be approved as soon as mid September. United Way staff will make recommendations based on requests that have come in and other analysis of needs and service gaps.
