City of Nanaimo youth leadership training program celebrates 40th anniversary

LIT and Quest program participants, past and present, invited to Aug. 19 celebration

City of Nanaimo is inviting all current participants and alumni of its Leaders in Training program to a 40th-anniversary celebration.

The program began in 1982 with the goal of providing youths with leadership training and opportunities to strengthen their connection with the community via volunteerism, noted a press release. Quest, the second level of the youth leadership program, began in 1996.

LIT participants have volunteered at day camps, special events, community involvement projects and sport, art and pre-school programs. So far this year, participants have volunteered at Canada Day festivities, Silly Boat Regatta, dragonboat festival, bathtub race, Commercial Street Night Market and the upcoming Vancouver Island Exhibition.

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said LIT is unique for a recreation program and “ignites passion” in participants. He expressed gratitude for mentors and participants.

“Since 1982, the LIT volunteers have assisted at a variety of Nanaimo events and have gained valuable skills helping them gain employment and make life-long career choices,” Krog said in the press release. “Leadership, self-confidence and life-long friendships are just a few of the many benefits participants report from taking part in this youth program.”

The anniversary celebration will take place at Beban Park Social Centre from 5:30-9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19. Former LIT or Quest members who wants to attend are asked to e-mail emily.hoppe@nanaimo.ca or call 250-756-5200 by Monday, Aug. 15 to RSVP.
