Book drive boosts reading opportunities

Those well-read books sitting on a shelf or in a box in the basement can play a big part in helping a child learn to read.

Organizers for the 13th annual Books for Kids fundraiser are starting to collect books for the March sale event with a drop-off book drive at Country Club Centre Saturday (Jan. 22) from noon to 4 p.m.

The book drive takes place in the mall’s parking lot near Dairy Queen, underneath a pair of Save-On-Foods tents.

People can also drop off books at North Cedar, North Oyster, Georgia Avenue, Park Avenue, Fairview and Rutherford elementary schools.

The book sale is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in March at Woodgrove Centre.

Last year, Books for Kids raised just under $9,000. Proceeds of the sale go toward buying books for school libraries.
