Blanket call for support

NANAIMO – Local chapter of Blankets for Canada seeks volunteers.

The Nanaimo chapter of Blankets for Canada needs volunteers to help to pick up and sort donations.

Blankets for Canada is a volunteer society dedicated to giving blankets to people who are in need of warmth. Since 2002, the Nanaimo Chapter has delivered more than 4,300 blankets to organizations here in the city that work with those in need.

For the sixth year in a row, the 2014 output was more than 400 blankets. They went to recipients such as Clearview Centre, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Tillicum Lelum Friendship Centre, the Women’s Centre and several Christmas hamper programs.

Volunteers are needed to pick up squares at Michaels Arts and Craft Store and Volunteer Nanaimo, sort them into groups of 48 and supply them to other volunteers who sew or crochet them together. This requires some storage space and the ability to deliver to volunteers who do not have transportation.  Some experience crocheting or knitting and a sense of colour would be useful.

The group could also use help in sewing labels on finished blankets, storing them and delivering to local organizations.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Charlene at 250-716-2177.
