The Barsby Bulldogs always do their best on the gridiron, and this week they’ll be doing their part for Nanaimo’s gardens, too.

John Barsby Secondary School’s football program is holding its annual manure sale this Wednesday through Saturday, March 30-April 2.

Rob Stevenson, Bulldogs coach, said the fundraiser is “essential” as it ensures players have first-rate protective equipment, and money goes to uniforms, too.

“It’s important for the young people to do some work to put the shirt on their back,” Stevenson said, adding that seeing players shovel and bag manure is an opportunity for coaches to evaluate work ethic and commitment.

Cinnabar Valley Farms is donating the aged cow manure, and players will be in Barsby’s student parking lot off Bruce Avenue filling the bags. Cost is $5 for an approximately 40-pound bag of manure. The sale happens Wednesday and Thursday from 3-5 p.m. both days, Friday from 2:15-5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. or while supplies last.
