APPLAUSE: Volunteers serve up breakfast

NANAIMO – Society provides a healthy meal when times are tough.

To the Editor,

The Together We Can breakfast at the Nanaimo 7-10 Club Society was a resounding success again this month.

The event, sponsored by the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society in partnership with the 7-10 Club and the assistance of other local non-profits, takes place on Saturday prior to delivery of social assistance and old age security cheques so that many individuals are helped out with at least one good solid meal at a time when finances are particularly tight or non-existent.  Anyone is welcome to partake of the meal.

The full day of hard work from the many volunteers preparing food, serving, clearing tables and keeping a steady supply of clean dishes is impressive.

It was delightful to see one city councilor Diane Brennan volunteering at the recent meal. At similar events, I’ve noticed councilor Fred Pattje and Diana Johnstone helping out. This speaks volumes about Nanaimo city council.

I expect the John Howard Society would appreciate more volunteer assistance at future Together We Can and other events. Anyone interested can call  Cheryl Dodge at 250-754-1266.
