An advanced home-building systems designer and a senior manager with the Nanaimo school district were honoured with Top in Technology awards from the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of B.C.
The provincewide awards are two of only 20 presented to nominees from the 9,800-plus ASTTBC members.
Central Island members met at the Coast Bastion Inn Tuesday for the awards, hosted by ASTTBC executive director John Leech.
Pete Sabo joined the Nanaimo school district’s facilities department in 1990, and in his 21-plus years has risen to director of planning and operations.
He is responsible for the district’s capital planning and construction; maintenance, grounds and custodial; security; consulting and engineering contracts; transportation; energy management; and space and use agreements.
Larry Croome, of SIP Building Systems, now counts a Top in Technology award among his many honours.
Graduating from BCIT in mechanical design in 1989, Croome turned his focus from paper-making to research in engineered wood and accessories with MacMillan Bloedel.
Since 1995, Croome has specialized in industrial and structural design consulting and opened SIP, his own energy-efficient building and systems design firm, in Nanaimo in 2000.
He has carried his technology skills into creating energy efficient homes, through certification as an R-2000 Builder. His new goal is to achieve literally zero net energy consumption in his buildings.
