City of Nanaimo collecting overdue fees for business licences

NANAIMO – Staff are contacting business owners to remind them to pay fees.

Businesses operating in Nanaimo that haven’t paid licensing fees are now facing fines under the city’s business licence bylaw.

According to a press release from the City of Nanaimo, business licence invoices were mailed during the last week of November with a payment deadline of Dec. 31, 2016. Businesses are not issued annual licences until the fee is received.

Those requiring a business licence include independent consultants conducting business within or from Nanaimo and commercial building owners that lease space to other businesses within their commercial building.

Mobile food vending business licences are not renewable. A mobile food vendor must submit a completed application with supporting documentation each year that they wish to operate.

“The requirement for business licences assists in ensuring that municipal land use and parking regulations, building and fire codes, health regulations and all other relevant community safety requirements are adhered to by business operators,” said Nelda Richardson, manager of development support services and business licensing.

Licensing staff are contacting all outstanding licence account holder to remind them that their fees have not been paid.

For businesses that have not received their 2017 invoice or have relocated or for businesses no longer operating, please notify the licensing office by e-mail at licencing@nanaimo.ca or in person at the Service and Resource Centre at 411 Dunsmuir St.
