Beefs & Bouquets

Beef to the plow driver who completely soaked me in dirty slush at the bus stop at Fifth and Hillcrest. I could tell you were driving quite fast so I tried to back up as far as the snowbank would allow but you did not slow down. I am 68 and had to pick up a prescription and had no choice but to continue on soaking wet.

Beef to my neighbour for having cut the top of my large hedge on Stephenson Point. Both of you knew I wouldn’t be in favour of cutting this. My view is now of a trailer.

Beef to a certain co-worker who never brings in treats to share at work, but is always readily available to indulge in snacks that others have brought in, even to the point of filling her own containers to take goodies home.

Beef to the impressions that children get from seeing and reading about free housing, free food for entitled people who do not work but can still buy drugs and alcohol.

Beef to the horseback riders on the Coombs rail trail. You are tearing up the trail making it difficult to walk or bike ride on, and you are leaving heaping piles of your horses’ poo on the trail. Last I checked it was 2018 not 1820.

Beef to all the contractors, handymen, plumbers etc., who, after arriving at your house to carry out work, ask to use the washroom within 10 minutes of arrival. Do they not go at home before leaving for work? My bathroom is my private area and not a public washroom, and I resent complete strangers asking to use it.

Beef to those who do not take no for an answer. If someone declines a date, accept the answer, don’t persist and think it’s OK. It’s unwanted attention which makes it a form of harassment. This extends to workplace staff and even customers. I am there to do my job, not pursue romance.

Beef to modern mattress manufacturers. My last mattress lasted 20 years, cost less, had less bulk and weight and could be flipped over, doubling its longevity. Today’s un-flippable mattresses rapidly compress where you sleep leaving uncomfortable lumps elsewhere.

Beef to the TV station for bumping Coronation Street to the daytime for duration of the Olympics. Some of us longtime fans work and will miss what is happening on the show.

Beef to the appliance store that refused to share their phone to call assistance for an owl suffering from a mangled, broken wing. It was a cruel response.

Beef to all those Call of Duty players out there who turn on their microphone and then just breathe into it the entire game. It is beyond annoying. If you are going to turn on your mike, at least try to say something semi-purposeful.

Beef to Hollywood movie and video makers for making violent, explicit movies. Bigger beef to those who support violence by going to violent movies and buying violent videos. Notice what witnesses say after a shooting, they always say, ‘you only see this stuff in the movies.’

Beef to the person in the red car tailgating me on Uplands. Shame on you for honking and flipping me off while I was going the speed limit through a school zone. Did you not see the dozens of children walking?

Bouquet to the old man who accosted me in the bank lineup and berated me for my driving and cutting him off and asked how did I get my driver’s licence. I think you need a bright bouquet in your life.

Beef to the barber shop patron who proclaimed support for those who sexually assault women, and his insistance that those who have been assaulted should be sued. Don’t mistake the smiling and nodding of your hairdresser as a sign of support. She was smartly avoiding a confrontation with you and your misinformed opinions.

High-fives? No way, José! My 90-year-old poppa had his nose broken and then fell down a flight of stairs because of an oafish high-fiver.
